Let's Talk Books: Top 5 YA Fantasy Books from 2020

Image
Let's Talk Books! The last year has seen many events unfold throughout the world, from a world-wide pandemic to the American Election but what has kept so many of us strong throughout these last twelve months have been the fictional worlds that we can escape to through books, if even just for a few hours. In this list, you will find 5 of the Top Young Adult Fantasy books of 2020 along with a recorded book talk by yours truly that focuses on the topics and content of each that might be of interest to you as a reader.  Like the last post I made back in October, the Nightingale Private Library is currently unable to loan any materials and so I strongly encourage you to check these books out at your local public or community library. Additionally, any of the titles or images on this page will link you to the Halifax Public Libraries catalogue where you request the book with your library card if you are in the Halifax Regional Municipality.  Cemetary Boys - Aiden Thomas In a...

This week's Admin's Pick is Caraval by Stephanie Garber , a story of dreams beyond the imagination and nightmares so real they threaten to sweep Scarlett Dragna off her feet at every turn. Whatever you've heard about Caraval, it doesn't compare to the reality. It's more than just a game or a performance. It's the closest you'll ever find to magic in this world . . . Scarlett has never left the tiny island where she and her beloved sister, Tella, live with their powerful, and cruel, father. Now Scarlett’s father has arranged a marriage for her, and Scarlett thinks her dreams of seeing Caraval, the far-away, once-a-year performance where the audience participates in the show, are over. But this year, Scarlett’s long-dreamt of invitation finally arrives. With the help of a mysterious sailor, Tella whisks Scarlett away to the show. Only, as soon as they arrive, Tella is kidnapped by Caraval’s mastermind organizer, Legend. It turns out that this season’s C...

The dreamers walk among us . . . and so do the dreamed. Those who dream cannot stop dreaming - they can only try to control it. Those who are dreamed cannot have their own lives - they will sleep forever if their dreamers die. And then there are those who are drawn to the dreamers. To use them. To trap them. To kill them before their dreams destroy us all. Ronan Lynch is a dreamer. He can pull both curiosities and catastrophes out of his dreams and into his compromised reality. Jordan Hennessy is a thief. The closer she comes to the dream object she is after, the mor...
